Ezra Furman is a singer/songwriter and musician, from Chicago but now based in Boston. She is a member of the LGBT+ community, identifying as both bisexual and transgender. Furman is also Jewish, and her faith is an important component of her life, especially trying to find her place as a member of the LGBT+ community, and as a practising member of her faith.
Furman produces music across a variety of genres including alt pop, alt rock and indie folk just to name a few. She was the lead singer and guitarist of Ezra Furman and the Harpoons from 2006 until the group broke up in 2011, after which she continued to perform solo, producing several albums and other releases, including contributing music to the soundtracks to all four seasons of the Netflix series, Sex Education. Today I’ll be reviewing her single ‘Poor Girl A Long Way From Heaven’ which was released August 26th 2022.
‘Poor Girl A Long Way From Heaven’ opens with a slightly discordant and offbeat tune that builds, percussion infusing into it, creating an energetic and quirky melody that for me really works. I love Furman’s voice, rich and sweet, and especially suited to the overall feel of the track. I especially liked the little vocal harmonies throughout. I like the pacing and energy of this track as well, it’s got a lot of forward momentum, but it’s not racing to the finish, it’s just bouncy and energetic, and you’re carried along as it progresses. I already knew going in I was going to like this track, but it was just such a phenomenal and vibrant performance that I feel the need to urge you to check it out for yourself because it’s unique, engaging and Furman is a spectacularly talented performer.
