Joan & The Giants are a Perth based alternative pop outfit made up of Grace Newton-Wordsworth, Aaron Birch, Riley Sutton and Liam Olsen. Today I’ll be talking about their singles ‘Beg’ and ‘Narcissist’ which were released November 6th 2023.
‘Beg’ opens slow, reverberant strings, and a tight drum beat, leading into strong vocals that wash over you as you listen. Grace’s voice is powerful and vibrant, and when backed up by superb instrumentals it becomes even greater still. I was kind of surprised considering the name just how subdued this track was in terms of pacing and energy, but by no means was I disappointed as this song was deep and reflective and just transcendent to listen to. I’m so glad I had the opportunity to hear the track because Joan & The Giants have a brand new fan thanks to it.
‘Narcissist’ also kicks off softer and slower, a delicate guitar brings us in, and more of Grace’s rich vocals that balance perfectly with the acoustic strings. I like the balance between these two tracks, both are emotional and heavy but they have a lightness and a vibrancy to it that keeps you hooked. I said it a moment ago, but I’m so glad that they came across my inbox because I’ve had something of a hard time lately, and almost gave up running this site, but hearing artistry and powerful music like this really makes it worthwhile. I think after hearing both tracks, this one is my favourite though. It’s very close but this one just resonated with me a little more. Either way, two strong tracks from the Perth based band, and I’ll be keeping my eye out for them in the future.
So that’s what I thought of Joan & The Giants singles ‘Beg’ and ‘Narcissist’ and if you want to check that out for yourself then head on over to Spotify. While you’re at it, make sure and support the band by following them on Facebook and Instagram.
