Proper Youth are a dream-pop band made up of Adam Barito, Amy Nesky and Bobb Barito. We’ve covered the band before on Indie Light and you can click here to read more. Today, though, I’ll be reviewing their single ‘Modern Cowboy’ which was released May 24th 2024.
‘Modern Cowboy’ builds slowly, light synthy sounds and a regular percussive beat blend together with energetic strings and some funky synth horns to create a really rich, and engaging melody. The vocals work really well with the almost ambient vibe of the performance. It’s really cool how they can impart energy and forward momentum to a track while still maintaining a cohesive dreamy quality to the overall track. This is a really great track, and the percussion really adds a lot to the full song without overpowering it. I also really liked the vocal harmonies which worked especially well in the back half of the performance, melding perfectly with the instrumentals to make for a track that I won’t soon forget.
