Ruby Ibarra is a Filipino rap & spoken word artist and musician based in the Bay Area, California. She performs in Tagalog, Waray, and English. Today, I’ll be reviewing her single ‘A Thousand Cuts’ which was released March 1st 2020.
‘A Thousand Cuts’ opens slowly with synthy tones that build and expand, becoming more complex and yet remain surprisingly bright and delicate as well. The break comes when a guitar blends in, a more conventional instrumental melody that just adds richness to the performance, especially as Ruby’s vocals kick in, her voice strong and impressive, the flow is solid and the lyrics are profound and heartfelt. It’s a very well balanced track and I’m so glad I happened upon the artist randomly on Instagram because they are a sensational performer, equally skilled at more melodic, softer toned vocals, and harder, fast paced, rap vocals. I will be keeping my eye out for her in the future, and I’ll be reviewing a more recent release from then soon.
So that’s what I thought of Ruby Ibarra’s single ‘A Thousand Cuts’ which you can check out over on Spotify. While you’re at it, make sure and support the artist by following them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
