Jenny Baker is a phenomenally talented singer/songwriter and musician. We’ve had the good fortune to have covered the artist before on Indie Light and you can click here to read more. Today, though, I’ll be reviewing her EP ‘Person That You Need’ which was released June 14th 2024.
‘I’m Not Vienna’ opens with warm and vibrant strings that blend into vocals, and much like I said in my last review, I’m blown away by Baker’s vocal talents, her voice has a rawness and power that’s deeply engaging. As the track progresses, it incorporates a good use of percussion to add greater audio texture and bounce and picks up in energy and seriously you just get absolutely caught up in her performance.
‘Think You Would Have Liked Her’ is a little slower and more ambient off the bat, her voice matching the more subdued melody, but no less spellbinding. I prefer more melancholic and slow songs, I like to feel things and I like to feel deeply, and Baker is a performer that embodies the full range and talent that ensures she will go places. I really liked the slower pace of this, and the rhythmic balance of the strings that create such a well balanced track.
‘Too Much Not Enough’ has more warm and soulful strings and vocals, the instrumentals and singing, dancing together in a delicate and yet punchy balance. While the last track was slower, this one has a little more energy, and again you really feel the experience alongside the performer. I think the percussion especially was the star of this track, adding weight and impact to Baker’s vocals but overall the whole thing works perfectly, and I think this track was probably my favourite on the EP.
‘Little Star Interlude’ has a kid performing twinkle, twinkle, little star, and it was cute, and added a little bit of sweetness and sincerity as we head into the last track. I’ve always been a fan of these little interludes and this one was nice.
‘Person That You Need’ opens with gentle chords, a light piano melody that perfectly supports Baker’s tremendous vocals. While I really loved ‘Too Much Not Enough’ this track was very close to being my top pick for the EP, because it’s sincere, emotional and just such a flawless performance. Overall though, it was an amazing conclusion to an EP that I’m genuinely glad I got to hear.
So that’s what I thought of Jenny Baker’s EP ‘Person That You Need’ and you can check that out for yourself over on Spotify. While you’re at it, make sure and support the artist by following them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
