Wasia Project is an English musical project from siblings William Gao and Olivia Hardy. Today I’ll be reviewing their EP ‘how can i pretend?’ which was released May 10th 2022.
‘why don’t u love me? (re-recorded)’ opens with light rainfall, building a delicate atmosphere as strings and piano chords lightly flow into Olivia’s vocals, her voice rich and emotive and you are immediately captivated. This is a wonderful opening number, a nice energy and vibe that carries you along throughout the track. I like the choice to go for a relatively stripped back melody, it’s never too busy or overwhelming, and yet despite having a simpler structure, you’re left thinking about the track after it’s done.
‘ur so pretty’ kicks off with some gorgeous piano chords that fill up the space and just make you feel things, and they are perfectly matched by more of Olivia’s sensational vocals. I love the build and energy of this track, it never goes too fast or too hard, but it has peaks which just really sell the whole performance, balanced of course by softer, slower and more melancholic moments. Overall a well balanced track and an amazing song.
‘Impossible’ has dancing keys building up a melody slowly, and once again I am just blown away, you could get lost in these tracks. Unlike the past couple of tracks though this one picks things up, the light percussion adding in texture and urgency as the performance picks up. It’s really energetic and yet it still keeps a lot of what I’ve liked about the past few entries on this EP.
‘how can i pretend? (Demo)’ running water sounds blend together with ambient synthy chords and more of Olivia’s tremendous vocals, this time though the track is further enhanced by William’s voice, they complement one another vocally quite well and all together it is a very strong entry on an EP I will be returning to in the future.
So that’s what I thought of Wasia Project’s EP ‘how can i pretend?’ and you can check that out for yourself over on Spotify. While you’re at it, make sure and support the band by following them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
