Maisie Peters is an English singer/songwriter and musician from West Sussex. She is heavily influenced by Taylor Swift, to produce her own brand of pop music. Today, I’ll be reviewing her album ‘The Good Witch’ which was released June 23rd 2023.

‘The Good Witch’ opens with gentle piano chords, striking and blending with Maisie’s breathtaking vocals. The lightness and softness of the melody fill you up and you are just carried along in absolute wondrous delight. The percussive elements and the deep bass, add texture to the lightness and merge to create a truly sensational opening track to what I’m sure is going to be an exceptional album.

‘Coming Of Age’ kicks off hard and fast, heavier and bassy and faster up front than the previous track, but the energy really does pick up where the end of the last track leaves off, really keeping you on the edge of your seat. Another phenomenal performance, high energy and complex, and seriously folks its tracks like this that make me so grateful to be doing this job. The energy of this track especially is very invigorating, the balance of faster and slower, and throughout, Maisie absolutely hammers forward, with stellar vocals, and a backing melody that serves her voice perfectly.

‘Watch’ slows things down a touch, deeper, more sustained strings, and Maisie’s voice is just amazing, powerful and engaging, and beautiful all at once. So far each track has been a perfect balance of highs and lows, and explosive energy counterpointed by softer, more melodic sections. She’s clearly a very capable artist and I’m just blown away by this track.

‘Body Better’ has a nice percussive undertone which adds a lot to the track, while remaining relatively understated. I only recently came across Maisie, and yet with each track I feel like I know her a little better, this poignant and emotional entry just overwhelms you, as you feel her raw and unfiltered emotions throughout. It is almost too close to call, but I think this track is my personal favourite on an album positively packed full of superb entries.

‘Want You Back’ slows things down again, and I cannot overstate just how sensational her voice is, its equal parts uplifting and haunting, just beautiful in a way that conveys so many feelings at once. This lighter number just sticks with you. I really like the composition of this track, it would have been easy to just stick to slow and soft, but the faster moments really help to build layers to the track. I just declared the track above as my personal favourite, but this has got to be a close second, because it’s profound, catchy and I’ll have it on repeat for a while.

‘The Band And I’ is another slow start, gentle percussion leading us forward, into more high powered and astounding vocals. This track is just a perfect cacophonous blend of energy, instrumentals and vocals, to create a rich, frenzied melodic performance. But much like the other tracks it’s not all one thing, the slower moments juxtaposing the faster, and as I listen I am just lost in the moment.

‘You’re Just A Boy (And I’m Kinda The Man)’ is a little more bouncy and playful and you just get taken on a journey across the 3 minute and 5 second run time. I like the bass backing, it adds a little funk to the melody, and works really well throughout.

‘Lost The Breakup’ has a really smooth melody, fast and yet very rhythmically complex, it creates a really rich backdrop to her explosive, melodic voice, which just hammers forward. I like to be positive here on Indie Light, but albums like this make that job infinitely easier, as each song has been absolutely perfect, in intent and execution.

‘Wendy’ kicks off slower, with sonorous strings, carrying her voice and lifting it even higher. This has a superb beat, and a really catchy hook. I have a truly terrible brain. I love singing and I love music but I cannot keep lyrics in, so I end up just singing just one little bit, and I know I liked this song because I’ve been singing little bits of it on and off for the past week.

‘Run’ opens with synth driven tones, which blend with Maisie’s vocals, the counterpoint of the deeper and sustained opening notes of the melody, and her faster delivery really works. Of course, both begin to trade off, slower vocals and faster melody, again a rich contrast to create a more developed and engaging overall track. Very fitting for a track called ‘Run’ though, it does have a very pronounced forward momentum which is sustained largely throughout the song.

‘Two Weeks Ago’ opens with soulful vocals that are just out of this world. Up until now I couldn’t decide if I liked her more melodic performances, or her faster and more vibrant ones, but this really helps me decide. Maisie is just a stellar vocalist, and while I have a preference for the softer and more melodic entries, she is just one hell of a singer, and her voice is just truly wonderful.

‘BSC’ hammers forward, intense and heavy, especially after the lighter melody of the previous track, and this entry has some amazing percussive beats that just make for such an enjoyable audio experience, I especially liked the blending of the thrashing percussive beats, with her vocals, it really worked for me.

‘Therapy’ opens fast again, a quirky string infused melody, and a sharp percussive beat all blending together to support Maisie’s vocal performance, and as we close in on the final couple of tracks she does not let up because it’s another sensational number in an album that has become an instant favourite.

‘There It Goes’ opens slower, piano chords leading us into an up tempo melody that balances well with her powerful voice. This penultimate track really does not let Maisie down, as it’s catchy and bouncy and emotional and just keeps your attention right to the end.

‘History Of Man’ really goes from strength to strength. I mean consistently throughout this entire album I was impressed by Maisie’s vocal talents, and yet she reaches new heights in the final track of this spectacular album.

So that’s what I thought of Maisie’s album ‘The Good Witch’ and you can check that out over on Spotify. While you’re at it, make sure and support the artist over on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
