Adanna Duru is a singer/songwriter and musician from Diamond Bar, California. Her parents are from Nigeria, and she draws inspiration and influence from her roots. We’ve covered the artist before on Indie Light and you can click here to read more. Today, though, I’ll be reviewing her EP ‘NAPPY HOUR II’ which was released February 9th 2024.

‘if i was a boy ;)’ opens fast, a flurry of sonorous tones, blending into Adanna’s strong vocals, the energy and pace, fast and melodic. The track has excellent forward momentum and you’re immediately hooked and carried along with it.

‘Put It Down’ is darker and heavier, slower too, blending in sharp percussion, bass elements and her phenomenal vocals to create a really solid entry. I like that it slows things down just a touch after the previous entry which was just packed full of energy. The flow and counterpoint between Adanna and Mannywellz’s vocal sections really works as well.

‘CAROUSEL!’ opens with big, bouncy synth driven tones, and Adanna’s vocals are somehow both deep and smoky, and light and bright, the juxtaposition in delivery styles shows not only her range but adds texture to the whole performance. I really like the hook on this one, Adanna is an adept lyricist, and she knows how to put together a really strong track.

‘The Way’ slows things up, more acoustic and melodic, the rich guitar blending with her voice, and again we get to see another side to her voice, stripped back and raw, she’s clearly an exceptionally talented singer, and it really shines through in this track. I enjoyed all the tracks on this EP but I think this one snags the top slot, for my personal favourite on the release.

‘Shawty…’ keeps things slow up front, but with a bigger beat, the undercurrent of which is faster, lots of light percussive and bass elements weaving their way throughout, perfectly supporting Adanna’s vocal performance.

‘Say Ah’ finishes things up strongly, another heavier beat, long sustained notes, deep bass chords all working together to create something richly textured and engaging. Between this EP and part 1 I was already confident I liked Adanna’s music, but serious tracks like this that show off the range of her voice and just keep you hooked right until the end.

So that’s what I thought of Adanna’s EP ‘NAPPY HOUR II’ which you can check out over on Spotify. While you’re at it, make sure and support the artist by following them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
