Adanna Duru is an American singer/songwriter and musician whose Nigerian roots influence her unique brand of afro-pop. She has been featured as a contestant on season 3 of The Voice and season 14 of American Idol. Today, I’ll be reviewing her EP ‘NAPPY HOUR’ which was released March 10th 2023.

‘BABIES’ opens with a quirky bass infused melody, and light vocal fills that blend into Adanna’s sensational vocal performance. Especially for a shorter track this is a truly awesome entry, light and bouncy, a lot of energy without being too much, and it lingers just long enough to show you what she’s got, but leaves you wanting more.

‘Boogie’ opens with synth driven chords, a halting melody that breaks into a heavier, faster, bass infused beat. It perfectly supports her rich and textured voice. I got absolutely lost in this track, how there are two elements woven throughout, a faster instrumental structure, and a slower, more melodic vocal element, and that opposing harmony really wraps around you and doesn’t let go.

‘ur a bitch’ kicks up with light electronic tones that bleed into sharp, fast paced vocals, and an energetic backing beat. I love the ups and downs of this track, the back and forth between the beat and the vocals. It all comes together really well. I only recently came across the artist, and I’m glad I did because she’s so incredibly talented.

‘POP!’ has a strong, percussive build up, and counterpointing this, Adanna adopts a softer, lighter cadence to her vocal delivery, creating a nice audio balance. I really like the rhythm of this track, it really sticks in your head. In fact, while each song on this EP does something different, and there is not a weak track on the release, I think this one might be my personal favourite, just something about the beat and melody really work for me.

‘Stay In’ has some of the best vocal performances, on an EP that’s absolutely filled with stellar performances. I was specifically talking about Adanna’s vocals but now that I mention it, Leven Kali’s voice is amazing, smooth and harmonious, the perfect compliment to Adanna’s. The track has also got a solid, catchy beat, similar to what I really liked about the previous track.

‘Write On Me’ closes out the EP on a really strong note, a track with a lot happening, but it’s not too energetic or overwhelming, instead it’s got a strong core melody and you just get caught up in the performance.

So that’s what I thought of Adanna’s EP ‘NAPPY HOUR’ which you can check out for yourself over on Spotify. While you’re at it, make sure and support the artist by following them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
