Djo (also known as Joseph David Keery) is an American musician and actor, known for his role on Stranger Things. We’ve had the pleasure of covering the artist before on Indie Light, and you can click here to read more. Today, though, I’ll be reviewing his EP ‘D-Sides’ which was released November 17th 2023.
‘Uglyfisherman’ opens with an almost discordant tone which flows into an frenzied, almost 8-bit game melody, it’s quite striking, and as it fades out and totally becomes what I’d imagine would be the intro theme to some long forgotten arcade cabinet, I’m immediately engaged with this number. By this point I know I like Djo’s music, he has a strong grasp of how to make the offbeat work and this is just an incredibly cool entry.
‘Listen’ conversely to the previous entry is more stripped back, slower, a building percussive and synth driven melody, but one which just lingers in the back of your head. I like the balance and use of the percussive and bass tones, with the other tonal beats to create a unique and repeating rhythmic structure. It’s really cool and I’m enjoying this brief but interesting exploration of musical stylings. Plus just when you think the beat has settled it kicks up another notch, funkier and more fleshed out while still keeping the core beats set up earlier.
So that’s what I thought of Djo’s EP ‘D-Sides’ and if you want to check that out for yourself then head on over to Spotify. While you’re at it, make sure and support the artist by following them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
