Addison Grace is a singer/songwriter and musician from Utah, who’s Indie pop/bedroom pop music has been influenced by their identity as a member of the LGBT+ community, particularly their journey of self discovery via the song ‘I Wanna Be a Boy’ which helped them to realise they were Trans. If you’re interested in finding out a little bit more about Addison you can check out this interview we did with him a while back. We’ve also been fortunate enough to cover the artist a few times now on Indie Light and you can click here to read more. Today, though, I’ll be reviewing his EP ‘Things That Are Bad For Me’ which was released November 11th 2022.

‘Pretty Girl’ opens with a vibrant, building synth driven melody, before Addison’s husky and resonant vocals kick in, backed up by a building percussive beat, and then things just explode forward a high energy instrumental backing, with a more subdued vocal melody, creating a nice counterpoint that gives the track some nice texture and balance. A very strong opening number to what I’m sure is going to be a great EP.

‘Valerie’ also has a nice energy to it, a bouncing percussive beat that really builds and fleshes out, blaring strings that blend together creating a rich instrumental backdrop, and of course as always I’m impressed with Addison’s vocals. Their voice has never failed to take my breath away, and I’ve been so pleased to follow their career as they develop as a vocalist and musician. Much like with the intro track I particularly like the counterpoint, the higher energy of the instrumental melody, the faster and heavier percussion that acts as an inverse to Addison’s softer and slower singing. It works really well and gives the track added weight and vibrancy.

‘Everybody Seems to Love You’ has a really awesome guitar intro, it starts as just a playful riff, before exploding into a brief flurry of frenzied chords before bowing out beneath the weight and power of Addison’s voice. I cannot stress highly how incredible his voice is, impactful and soulful and wonderfully resonant. It is so close that I almost don’t want to call it, but I think this track scoops the top slot for my personal favourite on the EP. It just has a little something extra, whether it’s the strings or the vocals or the overall melody and composition it is just absolutely spectacular.

‘Out of Touch’ slows things down a touch, a lighter and softer blend of percussion and strings, closer in tone and energy to the rhythm and cadence of the vocals, but not for long, because the track builds in momentum, less of a jump than with the previous tracks, but a nice build, and a more even rise and fall than the previous entries on the EP. it’s a really good track, and even though another track on this list made my personal favourite, for some reason this was the one that got stuck in my head for days.

‘If Nobody Likes U’ is a strong closer to what has been a dynamic and riveting EP, compared to the other entries on this release, the instrumentals are relatively stripped back, simpler while still being impactful, and instead the vocals taken on greater prominence and of course this is where Addison thrives so I was positively spellbound throughout.

So that’s what I thought of Addison Grace’s EP Things That Are Bad For Me and if you want to check that out for yourself then head on over to Spotify. While you’re at it, make sure and support the artist by following them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, visiting their website and of course checking out their Tik Tok.
