Christina Chong is an English actress and singer/songwriter. A graduate of the prestigious Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts; she is noted for her work on Black Mirror, Doctor Who and most recently her role as La’an Noonien Singh on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. I was fortunate enough to ask her a question at ACME Comic-Con back in late 2023 where she also mentioned her debut EP. Speaking of which, today, I’ll be reviewing her EP ‘Twin Flames’ which was released August 11th 2023.

‘Twin Flames’ opens with light but energetic guitar, which flows beautifully into Christina’s sensational vocals, her voice rich, and deep and emotional as it washes over you. This is my first experience with her music, and immediately I’m blown away by her depth of skill, and raw talent. Her singing is just awe inspiring, but equally good is the balance of the instrumentals, the percussive beats, the rhythm and the strings which build up into a complex melody. I had no idea what to expect when I decided to check out her EP but I’m incredibly grateful that I did because she has such a soulful and energetic performance that I could guarantee just from this track that the entire album is of equally high quality.

‘No Blame’ kicks off with softer guitars, slower, a building melody radiant and melancholic in equal measure, the perfect backing for Christina’s vocals, which reach even greater heights in this track, she has a voice that’s powerful and captivating in equal measure. I’ve talked about this alot recently because I’m getting back to writing after a mental health break but it’s such a pleasure to be able to experience artistry like this. This track though just flows really well, the vocals blending into subtle and then blooming instrumentals. It’s a superb track, and it solidifies my earlier statement that this is going to be an incredible release.

‘Can’t Show Love’ kicks off with vocals, slightly augmented, before a drum infused beat kicks forward, it has a nice energy to it, solid forward momentum, and a nice hook that sticks in your head. Yeah, I’d definitely say this track was the most outwardly catchy on the track. It’s got more of those sensational vocals, but the instrumental sections really tie this track together, it’s got a solid back and forth to it as well which elevates it further. The harmony between the strings and drums especially are a highlight and they equally counterpoint and support the vocals to create an incredibly solid track.

‘I Get to Choose’ has Christina show another side to her voice, lighter and softer, more delicate than the previous few tracks but equally riveting, if anything it feels more vulnerable, and you kind of get lost in the performance. Much like my comments on the above track, this one also has a really solid balance between the instrumental sections and the vocals, they work well separately and both have their spotlight moments but in harmony are the strongest elements of the whole track.

So that’s what I thought of Christina Chong’s EP ‘Twin Flames’ and if you want to check that out for yourself then head on over to Spotify. While you’re at it, make sure and support the artist by following them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
