Tom Felton is an English actor and musician, probably best known for his portrayal of Draco Malfoy in the movie adaptations of the Harry Potter series. A topic he revisited in his 2022 autobiography ‘Beyond the Wand: The Magic and Mayhem of Growing Up a Wizard’, where he discussed the highs and lows of being attached to such a project and dealing with the fame. It’s incredibly entertaining, honest and engaging to read, and well worth it whether or not you’re a fan of the aforementioned franchise. Today, however, I will be reviewing his EP ‘ReD’ which was released January 28th 2024.
‘Fairies and Feathers’ opens fast, with light and bright acoustic guitar infusing Tom’s vocals. Now I suspected prior to actually hearing any of his music that he’d be a talented vocalist and I was correct he has a natural warmth and positivity that comes through in his singing, and a rich and energetic cadence that immediately endears you to him as the listener. The track is bouncy and engaging, with a lot of heart, you just get caught up with the whole vibe.
‘Take me AwaY’ slows things down, and Felton successfully portrays melancholy and depth as much as he portrayed joy and positivity and brightness in the previous track. Someone said recently that I’m drawn more to sad songs, and I guess that’s true because while I genuinely really enjoyed the previous entry, this track just really worked for me. It’s poignant, with a solid melody and a nice hook that really clicked for me. I enjoy Tom’s lyricism, he has a strong grasp of what he’s trying to convey, and in this EP he’s managed to craft honest and forthright messages that just flow extraordinarily well.
So that’s what I thought of Tom Felton’s EP ‘ReD’ and if you want to check that out for yourself then head on over to Spotify. While you’re at it, make sure and support the artist by following them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
