Ash The Ghost is a New York based singer/songwriter and musician who I first came across a few months ago, when the clouds parted on my Instagram algorithm and I was finally getting awesome music suggestions rather than narrations of Reddit posts and stuff ripped from Tumblr. Today I’ll be reviewing their single ‘achy bones’ which was released July 13th 2023.
‘achy bones’ opens with some smooth, rich bass, just building, like electricity, as the powerful guitars get layered over top, and then Ash’s vocals kick in, her voice, sweet and melancholic, with a sincerity and vibrancy that soothes the soul. The light percussion adds texture to the melody, which keeps building throughout, gaining energy until it’s faster than I would have expected after hearing little snippets of this track on social media. Which reminds me, due to my job I often get targeted ads from musicians, that wasn’t the case this time, but I bring it up because while I’ve found some spectacular songs that way, I’ve also on occasion been overexposed to a track, to the point where I’m sick of hearing it, or worse only the chorus is engaging, and I spend the entire song waiting for it to loop back around, this track lives up to the hype, is consistently great throughout and more important, is better than just a catchy, memorable hook, but has substance and I would be more than happy to hear it a few hundred more times. It’s just got a nice cadence to it, a well balanced tempo and it just feels right, as I’ve gotten more comfortable with writing how I want to write these reviews rather than conforming to what I think I should write, I’ve been more comfortable talking about vibes and feels with tracks, sure it might not always communicate clearly the ‘quality’ of a track, but I hope you as the reader, and the artist know that when I say that the track just ‘feels’ right, that it is the highest compliment of which I’m able to give, because in a world that often makes me feel confused, uncomfortable and anxious it is of a tremendous comfort to find a piece of art which makes me feel the opposite.
So that’s what I thought of Ash The Ghost’s single ‘achy bones’ and if you want to check that for yourself then head on over to Spotify. While you’re at it, make sure and support the artist by following them on Instagram and TikTok.
