Sparkbird is a musical project from Stephan Nance a non-binary, queer singer/songwriter and musician from Portland, Oregon. They make their own unique brand of piano infused melodies which they call chamber folk-pop or Poetic piano pop. I’ll admit I only recently discovered the artist but I was charmed by their music, and decided I’d check out more. Today I’ll be reviewing their single ‘November’ which was released October 20th 2023.

‘November’ opens beautifully, strings and percussion with a heroic build that flows into Sparkbird’s rich and sweet vocals. This track has a really great energy, I remember first hearing it on Instagram a few weeks ago, when the artist was asking which fandom would be claiming it and I’ll admit, the energy, the flow, the whole vibe of the track has an incredible cinematic feel to it that really works. Sparkbird successfully creates a track that’s riveting, engaging and that I’ll be certain to burn out my replay button listening to more than once. I love the transitional melodies, each bringing their own vibe and energy, but nonetheless sealing in the idea of ‘big soundtrack vibes’, arguable less so as it continues just because of the change in overall melody, but the it reminded me a little of ‘The World is Mine’ by Samm Henshaw which also has a similar vibe. Overall though this is a sensational track that has ensured I’ll be keeping Sparkbird on my radar in the future.

So that’s what I thought of Sparkbird’s single ‘November’ and if you want to check that out for yourself then head on over to Spotify. While you’re at it, make sure and show support for the artist by following them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
