Mal Blum is a singer/songwriter and musician from New York, who is an open and proud member of the LGBT+ community. I’ve been in love with their music since I first heard ‘You Look A Lot Like Me back’ in 2015. Speaking of which, this isn’t the first time I’ve reviewed their music either and you can check that out by clicking here. Today, though, I’ll be reviewing their single ‘Xmas Eve’ which was released December 1st 2023.
‘Xmas Eve’ opens with even tempo strings and percussion, and Blum’s rich voice flows into a bouncy and quirky classic that reminds me why Christmas is my favourite time of the year. I like the energy of this track, it’s got a nice beat and rhythm, and it’s always a treat to hear Blum’s voice, the harmony at points throughout further enhance the track. I like songs that are catchy without relying upon bucolic hooks, this just has a vibe and melody that locks it in your head and I’ll be sure to have this on repeat all throughout the holiday season, because it’s a track that doesn’t gloss over the harder parts of life, or the season, but nonetheless makes something beautiful out of all the mess. If you do anything this December other than eat Turkey and argue with well meaning relatives about why you aren’t married yet, then I strongly urge you to check out this song, because it highlights Mal’s unique experience, and their sensational talent as a songwriter and musician.
So that’s what I thought of Mal Blum’s EP ‘Ain’t It Nice’ and if you want to check that out for yourself then head on over to Spotify. While you’re at it, make sure and support the artist by following them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
