Mutes are a three piece post punk/noise rock outfit from Birmingham. Originally a solo project by frontman James, who is the group’s vocalist and guitarist. He has subsequently expanded the project into a full band, featuring Tom Hewson on Bass and Craig Bainton on Drums. Today, I’ll be reviewing their single ‘Mere Slaughter’ which was released November 17th 2023.
‘Mere Slaughter’ opens fast and hard, dark heavy strings and percussion fuse together in a frenzied rhythm. The vocals layered on top, imposing and powerful against the backdrop of the track. This song has a fierce vitality and edge that really makes it worth checking it, the harshness blending and boosting the overall number, as you feel the raw and volatile performance. The shrieking vocals especially were awesome, but the whole energy and balance of this track is superb. I ended up listening to this like last night, and even though I was exhausted, it really jarred me awake and kept my attention. If this is the quality Mutes is capable of, then I’m eager for more.
So that’s what I thought of Mutes single ‘Mere Slaughter’, and if you want to check that out for yourself, then head on over to Spotify. While you’re at it, make sure and show support for the band by following them on Facebook and Instagram.
