GIRLS.SPEAK.FRENCH are a four piece, Glasgow based, Indie/rock outfit made up of Giacomo Matvichuk on Guitar, Daniel Northfield on Bass, Joshua Campbell on Vocals and Sam Lomas on Drums. Today, I’ll be reviewing their debut single ‘Britpop Genius’ which was released February 28th 2023.
‘Britpop Genius’ opens with really bouncy guitars and bass which build and gain momentum, and from that moment my confidence that I’d like this song was validated. The strong vocals emerge, bleeding into the strings and tight percussion. It has a really nice energy and vibe, not too crazy or frenetic, but just a really smooth rock infused beat that just lingers in your head after you hear it. I’m bad for hearing a song and then absolutely playing it to death but when you get a superb track like this, catchy and captivating it makes it worth it. It just flows together so well, I think the lead vocalist has a great voice, it is never drowned out by the instrumentals, and they mesh together perfectly, no overblown elements, just a perfect synergy of musical talent. Plus there are just some standout sections for both the drums and strings to showcase themselves.
Especially for a debut number, they are already crashing through ceilings of competence, technical proficiency and sheer badassery that some bands never reach. I don’t know if I could back this up with anything but a personal anecdote, and i’ve been accused of being too personal in these reviews but this is a fantastic summer tune, it’s not like a pop beat that just seems bright and cheerful like a summer sun, but it’s more like a track you’d put on, while lying at the beach with your mates, drinking a beer. I said it up top, but I’ll repeat, I’m glad that the group reached out as reviewing tracks like this makes the job worth it, and I’ll be sure to keep an eye out for them in the future.
So that’s what I thought of GIRLS.SPEAK.FRENCH’s single ‘Britpop Genius’ and if you want to check that out for yourself then head on over to Spotify. While you’re at it support the band by following them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
