Meghan Trainor is an American singer/songwriter and musician from Nantucket, Massachusetts, who first gained popularity after her debut single ‘All About That Bass’ reached number 1 in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, with the song subsequently selling 11 million copies worldwide. Her work has been praised for often featuring themes about modern womanhood, dealing with mainstream body images, and the concept of personal empowerment, however she has also been criticised at times for what some people feel are antifeminist or reductive views in her music. Either way, it has not stopped her from becoming a successful music artist, with a Grammy Award, four ASCAP Pop Music Awards, and two Billboard Music awards under her belt.
The song we will be discussing was apparently inspired by an exercise Trainor’s therapist suggested for her, where to combat insecurities regarding her post pregnancy body, she should look at herself completely naked for five minutes. I think despite its upbeat pop ballad energy, and the vibrancy and colour of the full track, you can still feel the vulnerability. Today, I’ll be reviewing her single ‘Made You Look’ which was released October 21st 2022.
‘Made You Look’ bursts forward with Meghan’s powerful vocals. I always liked her voice, there is a depth and richness to it, that I very much like in a vocalist. It has a nice bounce, and pounding percussive beat backing up her singing, and the whole song has a really nice, jaunty melody to it. I’ve made the point before that my personal preferences for music lean more towards the slow, and melancholic but occasionally I’m surprised by a song like this that’s catchy and up tempo and just has a vibrancy and energy that really captures you as a listener.
So that’s what I thought of Meghan Trainor’s single ‘Made You Look’ and if you want to check that out for yourself then head on over to Spotify. While you’re at it, make sure and show your support for the artist, and keep up to date with their latest goings on, by checking out their website and by following them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
