Evelyn Laurie is a singer/songwriter and musician from Paisley, Scotland whose music encompasses a variety of genres but she is most comfortable performing Jazz infused melodies. Today, though, I’ll be reviewing her single ‘Forever Autumn’ which is a cover of a track written by Jeff Wayne, Gary Osborne and Paul Vigrass. Perhaps the best known version, and the one from which Evelyn draws inspiration, is Justin Hayward’s rendition, from the album of Jeff Wayne’s musical version of ‘The War of the Worlds’. Evelyn released her cover of ‘Forever Autumn’ on November 4th 2022.

‘Forever Autumn’ opens with a light percussive fill, that flows into a bouncy, piano infused melody, that just draws you in. Evelyn’s voice is rich and magnetic, it works with the beautiful swell of the jazzy rhythms. I don’t recall ever having listened to the original, but Evelyn makes a good case for it, as her rendition is truly breath-taking, all at once it is vibrant and high energy, and yet with a subdued internal pacing that really works for it, a nice juxtaposition of melody and structure. It occurs to me that it’s a little like Autumn, caught between the heat and energy of Summer, and the slower, more paced feel of Winter. I thoroughly enjoyed this track, and seriously folks if you get a chance to hear Evelyn perform then I strongly suggest you do so as she’s absolutely magnificent.
