These Girls These Boys is a band formed by Vanessa Morgan and Drew Ray Tanner, who bonded over their love of music whole working on the set of Riverdale where they played Southside Serpents, Toni Topaz and Fangs Fogarty respectively. We’ve also reviewed Morgan as a solo artist, and you can click here to read more. While doing a little bit of research for the review I was able to find an interview with the pair, where they talk about how they have no plans to overly define the bands sound, specifically Tanner said “Vanessa has a lot of music tastes and so do I. Each of the six songs that we wrote together is completely different”. Regardless of genre, I’m eager to hear more from the band in the future. Today, though, I’ll be reviewing their debut single ‘Sleep When I’m Dead’ which is a more pop infused melody, and was released May 15th 2020.

‘Sleep When I’m Dead’ opens with Morgan’s vocals, and I already knew she was a talented vocalist but her voice was just sensational in this track, and I feel that her softer, more soulful voice resonates and pairs well with Tanner’s deeper, richer one. I love the energy of this track, the rapping sections flow well from the more melodic, singing sections, and it’s got great pacing so you just get caught up in it. You can feel the chemistry between the pair, which is something Riverdale recognised and capitalised on in the most recent season. The electronic driven backing melody and in particular the percussive rhythm of the beat especially help this track stand out. After hearing this I’m eager to hear more from the artists.
