Indie Light

Addison Grace is a singer/songwriter and musician from Salt Lake City, Utah, who has since moved to Los Angeles. Which reminds me, we’ve covered the artist before on Indie Light, and you can click here to read more. Today, though, I’ll be reviewing their EP ‘Immaturing’ which was released May 6th 2022.

‘I Wanna Be a Boy’ opens soft and slow, a bittersweet melancholic ballad. Addison’s heart just pours out, accompanied by soft acoustic guitar that builds as the instrumental backing rises and drops in momentum. I think that’s what I like most about this track, the energy and momentum is very unique, too much punch to be ambient, but soft and thoughtful nonetheless.

‘I Don’t Wanna Fall in Love’ has an electronically charged opening that flows into Addison’s sensational vocals. It’s so powerful, and you just get swept away in the delightful and poignant chorus. Again I really like the counterpointing and balance between the slower more melodic parts and the higher energy more confrontational parts, it makes for a really engaging track. 

‘Makes Me Sick’ opens with jangling chords that have an almost dream-like quality and you are eased slowly into the slightly offbeat melody which just really resonates with me. I’ve talked about Addison a lot on the site and each track I hear from them is just so honestly impressive. I liked the heavier, percussive beat throughout, counterpointed by the synthy, floaty vocals that just gel really well together. 

‘Kill the Switch’ opens with an acoustic guitar that blends well with Addison’s voice. They are such a talented performer and lyricist that I sometimes forget that what really gets me is that I can just get lost in their voice, it’s so transcendent and pure and worth listening to. 

‘Getting Used To’ has a distortion filled intro, a sort of offbeat ambient vibe that leads into some even tempo vocals. As I said above, vocals are the true champion of an Addison track and you are just taken over during this track, it’s just so lively and real. You feel the story unfold before you and you can’t help but think ‘That’s a real talent right here!’.
