Indie Light

Mal Blum is a singer/songwriter and musician from New York, whose music crosses the boundaries between folk, rock and punk. We’ve covered Blum’s music before on Indie Light and you can click here to read more. Today I’ll be reviewing their double single ‘Nobody Waits/San Cristóbal’ which was released November 20th 2020.

‘Nobody Waits’ opens with Mal’s rich, inviting voice leading us in, accompanied by a light bass that slowly builds, adding in percussive and guitars to add depth and complexity to the overall performance. But the highlight is the vocals which are soft and melancholic and wonderful, you just really get lost in their singing. That being said, I did really like the melody, it was a nice tune, with highs and lows, slower and faster moments and all together the result is a really strong number. 

‘San Cristóbal’ has a heavier, almost distorted guitar, with a staccato percussive beat that supports the vocals, and Mal gives another impressive performance. I loved the accent and delivery of this song, and man you just get caught up in this track. It has a nice energy, and whereas the previous song has a sadder, softer vibe, this was more confrontational and has an edgier vibe, it really worked and together both express the elements of a richly layered and incredibly talented musician. Much like with the previous track, the vocals are superb but the actual melody itself is really strong and really catchy.
