Shadow Academy are a progressive rock group from Los Angeles, formed by Dan Avidan (noted for his work with The Northern Hues, Skyhill, Ninja Sex Party and Starbomb) and Jim Roach (noted for his work with The Snax, The Rosewood Fall, and as the touring drummer for Hoku). We’ve covered Shadow Academy before on Indie Light, and if you’re interested you can click here to read more. Today, though, I’ll be reviewing their single ‘Once and Never More’ which was released February 25th 2022.
‘Once and Never More’ opens slowly, with a soft piano that builds, one striking note after another, bleeding into Dan’s angelic vocals, melodic and sweet and melancholic and just overwhelming. This is a powerful track, and while I have a lot of appreciation for Dan and Jim’s musical talents already I was just blown away by this track. It’s building energy and the powerful vocal delivery, balanced and supported by Jim’s playing. Both elements, deeply and richly blending together to create something touching and meaningful. I’m well aware of both artists’ prior credits but since this is only the second album from a relatively new group, it’s amazing how much they’ve managed to develop and codify their sound. I really look forward to what they do next.
So that’s what I thought of Shadow Academy’s new single ‘Once and Never More’ and if you want to check that out for yourself then head on over to Spotify. You can check out the music video over on YouTube. Don’t forget to like and subscribe. While you’re at it check out their website for more about the band and keep up to date by following them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
