Shadow Academy are a progressive rock duo from Los Angeles, California made up of Dan Avidan, a vocalist who has had quite a prolific music career including being a member of The Northern Hues, Skyhill, Ninja Sex Party and Starbomb. Alongside Avidan, is Jim Roach, a multi-instrumentalist and producer who has performed in bands such as punk rock outfit The Snax or The Rosewood Fall, and as the touring drummer for Hoku. Today, I’ll be reviewing their debut single ‘White Wolf’ which was was inspired by Herman Melville’s 1851 classic, Moby Dick and was released January 28th 2022.

‘White Whale’ opens with powerful, hammering guitars, which build and merge with the percussion and bleeds right into Dan’s phenomenal vocals, his higher toned voice working perfectly with the heavier instrumental backing. This track balances itself well, slower points counterpointed by full intensity sections, and Dan’s vocal additions incorporated throughout. Having followed Dan’s music career for several years now, It’s amazing to see things like this, see how far he’s come and how far he’s grown as a vocalist. Also Jim is an amazing instrumentalist and producer, this song just works, it has a powerful overall drive, but knows just when to let up for a moment. Both of them are firmly established musicians, and you can feel all of that experience and talent bundled up in this track, and I’m really excited to see what they do next.

So that’s what I thought of Shadow Academy’s single ‘White Whale’ and if you want to check that out for yourself then head on over to Spotify.
