Megan Thee Stallion is the performing name of American Rapper and songwriter, Megan Jovon Ruth Pete, who is from Houston, Texas. While Thee Stallion is her primary alias, she’s also been known as ‘Tina Snow’ or ‘Hot Girl Meg’ when performing, although both of these alter egos represent different aspects of her personality which she expresses through music, similarly to how Eminem has on occasion used other names such as Slim Shady to tell different stories or narratives through his music. Megan first gained attention when her freestyling videos went viral on social media, and has since become the second female rapper to win the Grammy award for best new artist, after Lauryn Hill in 1999.

In addition to releasing several chart toppers, and receiving numerous accolades such as the Grammy mentioned earlier, she also managed to graduate from Texas Southern University with a bachelor’s degree in health administration in 2021. What inspired me to finally review Stallion’s music was that apparently the program director for TSU’s health administration said that since Megan Thee Stallion graduated they’ve had a notable influx of former drop-outs returning to finish their degrees. This shows that not only is Megan inspiring and influencing people with her music, but also with her actions, and her commitment to her education.

Today I’ll be reviewing her single ‘Thot Shit’ which is part of her compilation album ‘Something for Thee Hotties’ which was released as a ‘thank you’ gift to her fanbase. The track in question was released June 11th 2021.

‘Thot Shit’ kicks off fast, Megan Thee Stallions vocal talents are impressive, she delivers the lines with clarity and speed, keeping a driving energy throughout the full track. It has a solid hook that sticks in your head, and you just get caught up in the relentless rhythm of the rapping. I will say, I was surprised by how subtle any instrumental backing was, just some light percussive beats which adds to the power and impact of the lines but fundamentally this is a track that either thrives or fails depending upon the quality of the vocals and Megan Thee Stallion’s voice is powerful, and she has a confidence and intensity that is well deserved and really makes this track all that it can be. Another surprise, considering the title, I was expecting something more flighty and upbeat, but this had a heavier note which worked really well for it.
