Grant Gustin is an American actor and singer, who is perhaps best known for his role as Barry Allen/The Flash on the Arrowverse television franchise, but most prominently on, The Flash. So this review is a little different, usually when I review a track or indeed a selection of tracks they usually fall into one of two categories, either songs written by the artist or group in question, or an artist or group covering another artist or group’s music. However this specific track falls into a nebulous third category where the track was technically written by someone else, in this case songwriting duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (noted for their musical contributions to La La Land and Dear Evan Hansen) but was written specifically for Grant Gustin as part of a musical crossover between the CW shows Supergirl and The Flash. The track in question was originally featured on season 3, episode 17 of The Flash, entitled ‘Duet’ and was later released as ‘Music from the Special Episode: Duet’ on March 22nd 2017.
‘Runnin’ Home to You’ the soft piano flows over you, as Grant begins to sing, his voice is soft, resonant voice just reaches you. I fell in love with this song the very first moment I heard it, and if ‘A Drop in the Ocean’ by Ron Pope wasn’t already mine and Tori B Bearly’s song then this would make a great contender. It’s just so hopeful and sweet, and you feel the love in every line. Sure I might be able to read that more because I am aware of the context of the song from the show, but honestly this track just bleeds sincerity and all of that comes through in Gustin’s voice and the gentle, piano accompaniment.
‘Runnin’ Home to You” (guitar version)’ the guitar brings a different energy to the track, you still feel the volume of feeling in Grant’s voice, but the whole track just hits ever so slightly differently because of the guitar infused throughout. But man could I listen to this song from on repeat for hours. I like that it has faster and slower sections, you’d think with all things considered it’d be all high energy, and intense, but it is well balanced and emotional.
