Caleb Hyles is an American singer/songwriter and musician from Montgomery, Alabama. I first came across his music on YouTube after listening to JonTron’s cover of ‘Firework’ by Katy Perry, which I reviewed, and you can check that out by clicking here. From the first video I was blown away by his voice, his powerful and theatrical performance, and just his amazing talent. I thought long and hard about which track I’d review first but since when writing this review I was also watching Steven Universe, and so decided that I would review something from the show. So that brings me to today where I reviewed Caleb Hyles cover of ‘Other Friends’ from Steven Universe, which was released September 21st 2019.

‘Other Friends (Steven Universe Cover)’ was the first track I ever heard by Caleb Hyles, and full disclosure I hadn’t seen (and still haven’t seen) the Steven Universe movie. I fully intend to but haven’t got around to it yet. I’m not bothered about spoilers though and to be honest this cover only made me want to see the movie more so Rebecca Sugar and Cartoon Network might wanna hire him for promotion cause Caleb’s voice alone got me interested in seeing the movie. Anyway, aside from all that background info, what I really like about this other than the male vocals coupled with his theatre ready voice adding a lot to the performance was that he really belted it out, I love intensity in music, when you can really feel the performer feeling the track and you get that from Caleb during this track. I listen to the original and to be honest even though it’s great it doesn’t hold a candle to this version which just blew me away. Also it’s interesting that even though he was covering a song sung originally by a manic, shapeshifting, alien that he delivered the lines with as much, if not more energy than the original. He also captured the feel, the betrayal and hurt of the character and portrayed it brilliantly.

So that’s what I thought of Caleb Hyles’s cover of ‘Other Friends (from Steven Universe)’ and if you want to check that out you can head on over to YouTube. Please consider supporting Caleb on Patreon so he can continue to make content. You should also check out his website, and you can keep up to date with Caleb by following him on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
