Jon Jafari, more commonly called JonTron is an American YouTuber, noted for being the co-founder and former co-host of Game Grumps, the co-founder of Normal Boots, as well as the operator of his own YouTube channel called JonTronShow. This isn’t my first time reviewing music by Jon, and you can click here to check that out. I’ve also created two Top 10s covering the ‘classic’ and ‘new’ era of JonTron’s videos on YouTube, and you can check those out by clicking here and here.
So today we will be reviewing Jon’s cover of Katy Perry’s song ‘Firework’ which he released February 14th 2016. He first performed this track way back on February 4th 2011, during his video DinoCity BRO!!! and it was met with a lot of attention and praise, so he promised fans during a charity livestream for ‘Teach For America’ that if they reached the donation goal of $25,000 he would release the full version, and of course we got it.
‘Firework’ is a powerful song, about being true to yourself and not hiding who you are, whether you like the original artist Katy Perry or not, you can’t deny that it’s a good song with a worthwhile message. JonTron truly does it justice, apparently coming from a musical theatre background, you get a strong grasp of his capabilities, and at least I was truly impressed by his range. There are points in the song where he is clearly straining his voice but even these sections fit well with the overall performance, and I like how he can swap between the more soothing, melodic sections and the high energy parts where he is belting it out. Honestly it was such a fantastic musical journey, backed up even more by a truly impressive video, animated in various different styles by at least 22 different people, whom you can find linked in the video description.
So that’s what I thought of JonTron’s cover of ‘Firework’ by Katy Perry and if you want to check it out then head on over to YouTube. Also for the latest update and to support JonTron make sure to follow him on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
